All about going Green

10 Green Resolutions for 2010 by Paperless Singapore

Haven't made your new year resolutions? It's not too late! Here are some ideas that you can adopt for a Green New Year!

1. Use 'green' shopping bags! Bring your own bag to carry your groceries when you do your grocery shopping. These can be jute or canvas bags, or even your own shopping basket, trolley, or straw bag. Get creative. Green shopping bags don't have to be ugly or unfashionable.

2. Don't print unnecessarily! If you don't need a print-out of that document, just file it properly in the correct folders. Having a good file-naming convention helps too, as it will make it easier for you to locate the file when you need it again. In fact, go digital. Everything is easier to find when it's stored in digital format, with proper file names! (No more rifling through huge stacks of paper just to find a single page of document!)

3. Turn off the lights, the computers, and all other electrical appliances when you are not using them. Make it a point to check these every time you leave a room.

4. Walk more! Reduce your carbon footprint by taking public transport (buses and MRT). Walking also gives you some exercise if you don't do it often, so you might want to alight at the bus stop 1 or 2 stops before your actual destination to give those legs some good working out!

5. Recycle! Don't blindly throw out items that you don't want anymore. Check which ones can be recycled or donated. There are recycling bins all around the island. Find out where they are! You may also want to consider posting your items at passiton.org.sg for needy families or charity / non-profit organizations.

6. Choose "Greener" protein! That means poultry and fish over beef and lamb and even pork. Read more here.

7. Stop eating endangered animals! That means Bluefin Tuna, Shark's fin, green turtles, etc. Read the full list here: 12 Endangered Animals That People Still Eat.

8. Send email greeting cards or an email, or just pick up that phone to wish someone a happy birthday. Reducing paper mail is a great way to go green!

9. Use less water. There are many ways of reducing the amount of water you use each day, including taking shorter showers instead of a bath (in a bath tub), using rain water to water your plants, and even using less water when you cook pasta!

10. Switch to Paperless Billing! A lot of companies offer paperless billing now; particularly, SingTel, M1, Starhub and SP Services. Opt for paperless billing, and sign up at GreenPost.com.sg to aggregate all your e-bills at one single location, with one single login ID!

Life is courage & preseverance

This is a very moving story and that we shouldn't take life for granted. Hope this video will inspire everyone.

Read the story before you watch the video.

In a Chinese modern dance competition on TV, one very unique couple won one of the top prizes. The lady, in her 30's, was a dancer who had trained since she was a little girl. Later in life, she lost her entire left arm in an accident and fell into a state of depression for a few years. Someone then asked her to coach a Children's dancing group. From that point on, she realized that she could not forget dancing. She still loved to dance and wanted to dance again. So, she started to do some of her old routines, but having lost her arm, she had also lost her balance. It took a while before she could even make simple turns and spins without falling.

Then she heard of a man in his 20s who had lost a leg in an accident. He had also fallen into the usual denial, depression, and anger type of emotional roller coaster. But she determined to find him and persuade him to dance with her. He had never danced, and to "dance with one leg .... are you joking with me? No way!" But, she didn't give up, and he reluctantly agreed thinking, "I have nothing else to do anyway."

She started to teach him dancing 101. The two broke up a few times because he had no concept of using muscle, how to control his body, and knew none of the basic things about dancing. When she became frustrated and lost patience with him, he would walk out. Eventually, they came back together and started training seriously. They hired a choreographer to design routines for them. She would fly high (held by him) with both arms (a sleeve for an arm) flying in the air. He could bend horizontally supported by one leg with her leaning on him, etc. In the competition, as you will see, they dance beautifully and they legitimately won the competition."

Timing our blessings

Take a minute and watch this true story. Most probably filmed in the Philippines. This film topped the competition in the 56th Berlin International Film Festival in February 2006. Count our blessings that we are indeed very fortunate ...

Timing for laughter

This was in my mail so I thought I share with everyone. Enjoy!

Best Divorce Letter Ever!

Dear Wife:

I'm writing you this letter to tell you that I'm leaving you forever. I've been a good man to you for 7 years & I have nothing to show for it. These last 2 weeks have been hell. Your boss called to tell me that you quit your job today & that was the last straw. Last week, you came home & didn't even notice I had a new haircut, had cooked your favorite meal & even wore a brand new pair of silk boxers. You ate in 2 minutes, & went straight to sleep after watching all of your soaps. You don't tell me you love me anymore; you don't want sex or anything that connects us as husband & wife. Either you're cheating on me or you don't love me anymore; whatever the case, I'm gone.

Your EX-Husband

P.S don't try to find me. Your SISTER & I are moving away to West Virginia together! Have a great life!

Dear Ex-Husband:

Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter. It's true you & I have been married for 7 years, although a good man is a far cry from what you've been. I watch my soaps so much because they drown out your constant whining & griping. Too bad that doesn't work. I DID notice when you got a hair cut last week, but the 1st thing that came to mind was 'You look just like a girl!' Since my mother raised me not to say anything if you can't say something nice, I didn't comment. When you cooked my favorite meal, you must have gotten me confused with MY SISTER, because I stopped eating pork 7 years ago. About those new silk boxers: I turned away from you because the $49.99 price tag was still on them, & I prayed it was a coincidence that my sister had just borrowed $50 from me that morning. After all of this, I still loved you & felt we could work it out. So when I hit the lotto for 10 million dollars, I quit my job & bought us 2 tickets to Jamaica, but when I got home you were gone. Everything happens for a reason, I guess. I hope you have the fulfilling life you always wanted. My lawyer said that the letter you wrote ensures you won't get a dime from me. So take care.

Your Ex-Wife, Rich as Hell & Free!

P.S. I don't know if I ever told you this, but my sister Carla was born Carl. I hope that's not a problem.

All about good food & family

Christmas is a special time for family and good food. But we should also eat healthyly to enjoy these many moments. Our family decided to eat out this Christmas instead.

As most of us are vegetarians, we had christmas dinner at 7 Sensations in Little India. The place was nicely decorated with christmas decorations and of course the food is simply delicious. This is one of my favourite vegetarian restaurant in Singapore.

For starters, we had Gado Gado which is a traditional Indonesian salad served with cashew nut sauce. Followed by Sambal Buah Keluak. A braised Indonesian buah keluak (nut) with sambal sauce in a clay pot. This is great with plain or brown rice. But we had Black Olive Brown Rice instead. For more fibre, we had the Shredded Ginger with Koniako ... Japanese Koniako (yam) stir fried with young ginger. The children chose the Western Kitchen. They had Vegetable Lasagna and Pizza. Then we ended with Green Tea Soy Yogurt which is a very refreshing desert.

Lastly, we exchanged Christmas presents and it was a very satisfying Christmas Eve dinner.

All about watching Kids Performing

Narnia, The Musical: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe was an exciting experience for my 4 year old niece. The casts from Kids Performing Repertory Theatre did a fantastic job. An original musical co-produced and directed by Terence Guillermo with executive producer Kuo Po.

It was held at DBS Arts Centre on the 20th and 21st December 2009. The musical was very colourful and entertaining but the lighting and audio could do with some improvement. Overall it was worth it. We will be looking forward for more performances from KPRT.

Check them out at their website, kidsperforming.com

Timing... a tribute to Grandma

One Of A Kind

The funny beautiful lady

That means so much to me

May be gone from the land of the living

But with me she will always be

Because my memory holds her dearly

And my pen recalls her ways

And most of all I love her

A love that always stays

It stays inside my memory

And is often on my mind

Because a lady like my grandma

Is rare and hard to find.

All About Grandma

Grandma went to heaven this morning. She was 90 years old.

I remember grandma used to make cute dresses for both me and my sister when we were little girls. She taught me 'Solitaire' which she called 'Patience' using playing cards. Whenever I visited her, she would be sitting on the floor with her cards.

Grandma had a great collection of Mills & Boon romance novels beside her bed. I used to borrowed some to read in school.

Oh grandma loved ice-cream. She would visit me at my work place and I would always get her a cone of her favourites. She loved to hang out in shopping mall. I asked her one day why she like the mall and she said 'I loved to people watch. You can see interesting people and what they are doing.' She would sit for hours everyday doing that and that makes her very happy.

Before grandma had dementia, she loved to doll herself up. Even when she was in her 80's, she would always have lipstick on and her hair dyed. But I must say she is one fine looking gal!

These are some great memories of her which will always be remembered.

O Por Por, You will be missed ... Love you so.

Life is ... Farm Frenzy

City folks like me and everyone else just love farming. Farm Frenzy 3 is a great time management game for both young and old. I love the graphics and although the game may be slow for me, it is still fun.
